Liverpool vs Manchester City Preview

Liverpool vs Manchester City Preview

Liverpool look to continue their assault on the top four as they host Champions Manchester City.

How things have changed since the last time Man City came to Anfield. Last time Liverpool had won nine in a row and were looking like favourites to win the league. The atmosphere was electric and a wonderful strike from Philippe Coutinho after a mistake from Vincent Kompany of all people put Liverpool in the driver’s seat.

We all know how it turned out but despite the disappointing end Liverpool finished second and secured champions league football. The reds enter this game in good form but the circumstances are remarkably different.

Liverpool in in sixth. They aren’t scoring goals for fun and they don’t have strikers playing out of their skin in the SAS. Instead the team is more solid, having a good defensive record and building on that foundation.

I don’t think any Liverpool fan is feeling as optimistic as they were last time. We all thought that the league title could return to Anfield after all those years but it wasn’t to be. While such stakes aren’t present it is still an incredibly important game for both sides.

A win for Liverpool would be vital in their pursuit for fourth place. They have every right to feel confident after winning five of their last six league games and not losing in the league in 2015 so far. A disappointing loss on Thursday night aside Liverpool’s performances have been very good and they have certainly looked like a top four side.

Manchester City meanwhile know they cannot afford any more slip ups. Realistically I don’t think they will retain their title this year, they’ve already lost too much ground. Five points may not seem like that big a gap but it’s not like they’re going to win every game they have left and I think they’re way too reliant on Yaya Toure.

City only won once in the league while the Ivorian midfielder was at the African cup of Nations and I shudder to think what would happen if he got injured.

They will form a tough test however for the Reds in their quest for top four, particularly after a disappointing and long game on Thursday. L

Liverpool also have multiple injury problems. Mamadou Sakho and Philippe Coutinho will likely return to the side however after missing the last game. Steven Gerrard will miss the game however and Jordan Henderson will have to be assessed.

These games are always tough to call. There will be an added spice with a team from Liverpool playing a team from Manchester and both teams suffered a loss in Europe in midweek. I think a draw is the most likely result here.

Besiktas vs Liverpool Match Report

Besiktas vs Liverpool Match Report

Liverpool’s European ambitions end for another year as they crash out of the Europa league in Turkey.

It was a disappointing night for Liverpool who under performed on the night and cannot complain about their elimination.

Very little happened in the game overall. In the first half Mario Balotelli slipped the ball through to Daniel Sturridge but he waited too long to take his shot and it was saved.

Besiktas mainly had shots from range until on the 72nd minute where after some neat interplay at the edge of the box substitute Arslan curled the ball into the top corner.

Late into the game a corner was taken and the ball fell to former Chelsea striker Demba Ba. He struck the ball goal wards but fortunately for the reds the ball cannoned off the bar.

Liverpool looked drained as the game went on after so many games recently and they couldn’t really get a foot hold in the game. Extra time passed them by with very little opportunity and the game went to penalties.

The first nine penalties were not saveable for either keeper. For the tenth penalty Dejan Lovren stepped up and his penalty blazed over the bar sending and this Liverpool side became the first to lose a penalty shoot-out in Europe.

The game looked a bit beyond the Reds who had multiple players out injured and having played so many games lately. The usually nimble attack looked slow and ponderous and Liverpool couldn’t get any dominance in midfield.

In extra time especially Liverpool barely had the ball in the oppositions half. While it’s always disappointing to go out of Europe it may not be the worst thing. Liverpool have had a lot of games this season and having less games was an obvious advantage for the Reds last season.

So yes it was a disappointing night for Liverpool who crashed out of the Europa league. They will need to improve their performance on Sunday when host champions Manchester City.

Besiktas vs Liverpool Preview

Besiktas vs Liverpool Preview

It crunch time for Liverpool as they travel to Turkey for the second leg of their Europa league tie with Besiktas.

It’s nice being able to write posts on this blog and talk about Liverpool’s good form. Liverpool have won 4 of their last 5 games, kept 4 clean sheets in that time and haven’t lost in normal time in 2015 so far.

The first leg was as many are a tight affair settled by one goal. After a squabble Balotelli put a late penalty away to give Liverpool a slight advantage going to Turkey.

The Reds come off the back of an impressive win away at high flying Southampton. Despite not playing at their best, Liverpool kept a clean sheet and clinched a crucial victory, the sign of a good side.

Besiktas lost their most recent away at Eskiehipor, a mid - table Turkish side. Besiktas have not scored in either of their last 2 games which will be a worry for them. They did however win their last home game 3 - 2 although this result if repeated would see Liverpool through on away goals.

Liverpool’s slight lead could prove to be a crucial one. Turkey is not exactly known as being an easy place to go to for any Football side, as Liverpool discovered to their previous visit to Beisktas in the Champions League where Rafa Benitez’s side lost 2 - 1.

Liverpool’s defence has greatly improved and it will need to be at its best to keep the Turkish side at bay.

Brendan Rodgers will be very encouraged to play his strongest side after seeing the Reds beat Southampton despite playing in the Europa league on Thursday. Despite concerns it would negatively affect the team, winning against Besiktas was still followed by victory at St Mary’s.

Liverpool have some injury concerns going into the game. Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson and Lucas Leiva are all likely to miss the game through injury. This will leave Liverpool light in midfield and while Emre Can could move forward into the centre, Sakho and Johnson may also miss the game leaving the Reds short at the back.

After dropping to the bench on the weekend Daniel Sturridge may return to the starting line-up. Jordan Ibe is likely to retain his place along with Alberto Moreno in the wing back position with Lazar Markovic being suspended.

Turkey is a tough place to go in Europe and a hostile crowd is guaranteed. However Liverpool should be confident with their recent good form and I expect them to reach the next round tonight.

Southampton vs Liverpool Match Report

Southampton vs Liverpool Match Report

Liverpool take a crucial step in the hunt for the top four with a win over high flying Saints and went only 2 points off fourth place.

Despite having the lion’s share of possession and attempts on goal, Southampton could not break down the resilient Reds who came out as 2 - 0 winners.

Southampton had a penalty claim waved away in the first minute when Filip Djuricic went down easily under a challenge from Emre Can.

Soon after Liverpool were ahead. Coutinho received the ball from Markovic and found himself about thirty yards out. However he struck a sweet dipping shot that went in off the underside of the bar for his third league goal of the season and surely with a goal of the season contender.

A minute later Southampton had another penalty claim turned down when Joe Allen appeared to trip Djuricic. The ball ended up falling in the box to Eljero Elia but his shot was deflected wide.

Liverpool had their own penalty appeal after Philippe Coutinho slipped the ball through to Raheem Sterling. Last man José Fonte appeared to trip the young forward as he went to ground but on a closer look you can see he just got the ball first.

There was another controversial moment just before half time where the ball was chipped though to Elia. His chipped shot was saved by Mingolet after the ball hit his chest and then his arm in what appeared to be outside his area. The referee however waved play on.

Daniel Sturridge cam on for Adam Lallana and soon made an impact. He skipped past multiple defenders into the box, but stumbled to the ground before getting his shot away.

Liverpool doubled their lead after Alberto Moreno ran onto a misplaced Morgan Schneiderlin pass and squared the ball to Raheem Sterling. His pass was over hit however Saints full pack Matthew Targett slipped allowing Sterling a shot which he dispatched into the net.

Mingolet was forced into a late save after Moreno bought down Mane for a free kick. It was taken by Tadic but Mingolet held onto the low shot well.

Liverpool also had a late attempt through Daniel Sturridge. Can played the ball t Sturridge who feinted past the defender before curling a right footed shot towards the bottom right hand corner. Unfortunately it was too close to the keeper who made a comfortable save.

Southampton will be very concerned after failing to score at home for the third game in a row. They slipped into fifth place after the defeat. Liverpool meanwhile made it a fourth win in a row and will be feeling confident ahead of their next game, away at Besiktas for the second leg of their Europa league tie on Thursday.

Southampton vs Liverpool Preview

Southampton vs Liverpool Preview

In a reverse fixture of the opening day in form Liverpool travel to Southampton for what could be a crucial match in the battle for fourth place.

Two of the leagues in form teams go head to head in a crucial match for champions league qualification. Liverpool have won four out of their last five games while Southampton have won three and drawn one.

This will be a tough test for Brendan Rodgers Liverpool, especially after playing in the Europa league on Thursday night. It is no secret that the Europa league can negatively impact the next match.

Southampton have the advantage of not playing in Europe similarly to Liverpool last season and we all know how that worked out. The Saints will hope they can use this to their advantage.

Liverpool may struggle to crack Southampton and their impressive defensive record. They do however score a good amount of goals and still hold the record league win so far this season with an 8 - 0 triumph versus Sunderland.

Liverpool’s defence has also been far more solid of late, with another clean sheet on Thursday. Goals have been more of a problem but the attack does look quick and pacey. Daniel Sturridge will only get  better with more game time which is a positive.

The reverse fixture was a tight affair. Liverpool took the lead through Raheem Sterling but Clyne equalised for Southampton. Late on Sturridge secured the win for Liverpool.

Hoping to feature will be Liverpool’s three former saints’ players in Lovren, Lambert and Lallana. Lallana may start but is more likely to be on the bench along with Lambert and Lallana. After leaving on not exactly the best terms and missing the home game, Lallana will want to play and make a good impression here.

Markovic may return to the starting line-up after his European ban on Thursday. Also likely to keep his place is the impressive Jordan Ibe who seems like he has been in the side for years, not just a few games.

It will be interesting to see what would happen if Liverpool are rewarded a penalty. Mario Balotelli took it on Thursday despite Henderson apparently being the designated penalty taker. Balotelli is unlikely to start however so the situation may not arise.

This is likely to be close. Both teams have been in great form and I predict a close game however with the game in Europe on Thursday I can’t see Liverpool winning. I think it’ll be a score draw.

Liverpool vs Besiktas Match Report

Liverpool vs Besiktas Match Report

Liverpool nick the first leg 1 - 0 as Mario Balotelli slots away a late penalty against stubborn Besiktas.

In a tight game at Anfield Liverpool secure a crucial clean sheet and prevent themselves from going six European games without a win. Mario Balotelli followed up his winner against Spurs with a crucial penalty to win the game.

Liverpool had an early chance through Daniel Sturridge. Jordan Ibe slipped through Sturridge who made it past the defender with a good piece of skill. Unfortunately for the England striker Besiktas keeper Genk Gonen made a save from a narrow angle.

On thirty minutes Besiktas had a good attempt from a corner but the header went over the bar. It highlighted Liverpool’s defensive frailties from set plays though.

Soon after Besiktas striker Demba Ba broke free after a quick break from a blocked Joe Allen shot. Through n goal though a repeat of last year didn’t happen as Mingolet made the save.

The Besiktas keeper Gonen had a save to make from Alberto Moreno. The ball was cleared from a corner but came sweetly to Moreno who thumped the ball goal wards from about thirty five yeards out. The keeper tipped the ball over the bar for a corner.

Early in the second half Adam Lallana had a great opportunity after the keeper dropped a Jordan Henderson cross after bumping into a defender. Unfortunately the ball wouldn’t fall kindly for Lallana and he skewed the ball over the bar.

Liverpool eventually did take the lead from the spot. Substitute Balotelli played the ball wide to Jordan Ibe who easily skipped past his marker, He made it into the box before being tripped by the defender for a penalty.

Strangely Sturridge and Balotelli seemed to squabble about who should take the penalty, despite Steven Gerrard on television saying Henderson should be the one to take it. Nevertheless Balotelli stepped up and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to put the Reds into the lead.

Jordan Ibe had the beating of the left back all night and this was an extremely encouraging performance from the young winger. Balotelli also looked good after coming on, even if I’ve been quite critical of the Italian of late.

Liverpool will be favourites to progress after securing the lead and conceding no away goal in the tie. They travel to Turkey for the away leg next Thursday but first face Southampton at St Mary’s on Sunday.

Liverpool vs Besiktas Preview

Liverpool vs Besiktas Preview

Liverpool host Turkish side Besiktas in their first leg tie of the Europa league last 32 as they look to add another European trophy to their long history.

Things have really been looking up lately for Liverpool of late. Another win last weekend and the Reds haven’t lost a game in normal time in the last fifteen games. Daniel Sturridge is back and is firing, even Mario Balotelli scored a goal. All is well at Anfield.

They welcome a Besiktas side who are top of their league in Turkey and have won their last four games. They bring with them a familiar face in Demba Ba, who in his last visit to Anfield scored the goal to sink Liverpool’s title hopes.

Besiktas will not have fond memories of Anfield. On their last trip to the red half of Merseyside they hammered 8 - 0 in the Champion’s League.

Liverpool’s Champion’s League campaign was poor. We all know it and the Reds will want to make amends in the Europa league. There is more incentive to win the competition this year with the winner automatically gaining a Champions League place regardless of league position. With a tough challenge to make up their slow start in the premier league Liverpool may take this competition very seriously.

A key player in the game will likely be Raheem Sterling who is likely to return to the side. Besiktas manager Slaven Bilić has recently stated that he thinks Raheem Sterling will become the Premier league’s best player.

Liverpool will be without Serbian international Lazar Markovic who has been banned for four games after his red card against Basel. This seems particularly harsh for something that I didn’t even think was a red card in the first place. He will however be missing for both legs of the tie.

Likely to return in his place is Jordan Ibe who was cup tied during the weekend. He has been performing well in the league and seems the obvious replacement for Markovic.

Daniel Sturridge seems set to make his European debut for the club, two and a half years after joining Liverpool. Changes to the side will likely be minimal despite a tough game away to Southampton on Sunday.

The match will likely be a tight first leg where neither team wants to give anything away. I do however predict Liverpool to nick this one 1 - 0. I wouldn’t be surprised if Liverpool concede a silly away goal from a set play though.

Crystal Palace vs Liverpool Match Report

Crystal Palace vs Liverpool Match Report

The Reds come from behind to topple their bogey team as they go into the quarter finals of the F.A. cup.

Many Liverpool fans may have feared another disastrous trip to Selhurst Park after going behind to Crystal Palace. The team from Merseyside however showed good character to book their place in the next round of the cup.

It was Palace who took the early lead though. On fifteen minutes a moment Martin Skrtel will want to forget when Joe Ledley played the ball up to Dwight Gayle. Skrtel ended up heading the ball on but Mingolet smothered the ball away. However the ball fell fortunately to Fraizer Cambell for an easy finish.

Six minutes later Liverpool nearly equalised through Adam Lallana. After some patient build up Henderson layed the ball off to Lallana who struck a left foot shot but Palace keeper Speroni made the save.

Liverpool had a shout for a penalty after Lallana’s low cross rebounded to Coutinho who had his shot blocked. As the ball came back Joel Ward appeared to handle the ball but the referee gave no penalty. The Brazilians resulting shot was caught by Speroni.

Palaces keeper made another save from a long range drive from Jordan Henderson. Then Liverpool had another shout for a penalty when the ball was deflected to Daniel Sturridge. New signing Pape Souaré then appeared to trip the England striker but nothing was given.

Before half time Palace nearly doubled their lead when Bolasie’s pass bounced of Skrtel into the path of Gayle. Though on goal his effort was saved by the legs of Mingolet.

Liverpool made the score one all early in the second half when Henderson played an exquisite chipped ball into the path of Daniel Sturridge. His left foot shot cannoned off the legs of Speroni and into the net.

Palace nearly re took the lead when they had a corner. The ball was half cleared but fell to Dwight Gayle. Fortunately for the Reds his bouncing shot was pushed away by Simon Mingolet.

Soon after Liverpool took the lead. Mario Balotellit won a free kick near the edge of the box and proceeded to take the free kick. His powerful low drive was saved by Speroni but fell into the path of the oncoming Adam Lallana who put the ball into the back of the net.

Palace had very few opportunities after this and as Liverpool continued to dominate possession the game fizzled out giving Liverpool the win.

Liverpool will be pleased with how they controlled the game and had the character to come from a goal behind. Their next game is at home to Besiktas in the Europa league on Thursday.

Crystal Palace vs Liverpool Preview

Crystal Palace vs Liverpool Preview

The Reds go away to Crystal Palace to try to book their place in the next round of the F.A. cup.

Away to Crystal Palace is not a pleasant fixture for Liverpool. It’ll be a long time before the scars of the 3 - 3 draw heal. Then there was the second collapse earlier this season. It’ll be interesting to see if this will hinder Liverpool’s performance at all.

Liverpool have been playing very well of late. After an impressive win against Tottenham, Liverpool have only lost once in the last thirteen games, an extra time loss to Chelsea. Liverpool have kept six clean sheets in that time.

Crystal Palace meanwhile have been in good form themselves only losing two of their last ten games. They have climbed to thirteenth in the league, five points above the relegation zone and level on points with Everton.

They eased past Dover Athletic in the last round and will be hoping to continue their progress. Since they are likely to finish in mid table they will want a good run in the F.A. cup.

Liverpool too will be hoping to win the cup. This is Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers third season in charge of the Reds and he is yet to win a trophy. After the loss in the league cup semi-final a victory in the cup could be a top priority for Rodgers.

Liverpool have another midweek game next week in the Europa league against Besiktas so they may need to give a few players a rest. Daniel Sturridge seems likely to be back on the bench as Liverpool will not want to risk injury so soon after returning to the start. With Lucas and Gerrard likely to miss the game Allen may come back into the side at the ground where he has scored his only premier league goal.

Jordan Ibe is likely to continue his run in the side after two good performances and it will be interesting to see if Mario Balotelli will start the game after scoring his first league goal for Liverpool on Tuesday.

Away at Palace is bad fixture for Liverpool. They will have to overcome their fears of previous collapses in order to progress, but with a good recent defensive record I think Liverpool can just about edge this one, although I would not be surprised if this game goes to a replay.

Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur Match Report

Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur Match Report

Balotelli scores a late winner for Liverpool as the Reds move within four points of the top four.

Well it finally happened, in a game where all the focus on strikers was focused on Kane and Sturridge, it only seems natural that a certain Italian would steal their thunder.

It was an exciting game however full of young talent as Liverpool made it nine league games unbeaten.

Spurs had an early appeal for a penalty waved away when Harry Kane took the ball from a Lamela pass. Mingolet came out and appeared to catch Kane but the referee judged it to be no foul.

Tottenham will be very disappointed all round with the first goal they conceded. The Liverpool keeper played a long ball forward towards Sturridge. Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen took the ball away but it ended up at the feet of Lazar Markovic. The defenders stood off so he could run into the box and hit a left foot shot into the net.

Spurs keeper Lloris will be disappointed as he got a hand to the ball but could not prevent the goal.

Spurs equalised ten minutes alter however. After some neat play between Lamela and Erikson the ball was slipped through to Kane who took the ball away from Sakho and powered the ball past the Liverpool goalkeeper for an impressive 23rd goal of the season.

The closest to another goal in the first half was through Daniel Sturridge. Impressive Jordan Ibe received the ball on the right wing and made space for a low cross by going past Danny Rose. The ball bounced around the area before reaching Sturridge. With his pack to goal he went for an audacious back heel but it struck the post.

Liverpool did take the lead in the second half. Sturridge received the ball from Ibe and went past Ryan Mason before being bought down by Rose. Gerrard stepped up and dispatched the penalty into the right corner of the net to restore Liverpool’s lead. This was Gerrard’s 183rd Liverpool goal putting him level with Robbie Fowler.

Soon after the ball fell to Erik Lamela at the edge of the box. His shot was powerful but brilliantly tipped over the bar by Simon Mingolet.

Spurs were soon level though. Tottenham won a free kick when Gerrard bought down Kane. Erikson’s free kick was saved but the ball came out to Kane who was in an offside position. Unfortunately the linesman missed this so Kane could square the ball to Moussa Dembele for a tap in.

Liverpool still had time to snatch the three points however as Ibe slipped the ball into substitute Adam Lallana. The England midfielder played a perfect cross into the path of Mario Balotelli who knocked the ball home to give Liverpool the win.

It was a good win for Liverpool, taking down in form Spurs in what was the game with the youngest average game of any premier league game all season. The Reds next game is in the F.A. cup on Saturday away at Crystal Palace.

Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur Preview

Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur Preview

Improving Liverpool take on in form Spurs in what could be a crucial game in the battle for the top four.

Liverpool and Tottenham are the two teams at the top of the premier league form guide with Liverpool taking 14 points from their last 6 games and Spurs taking 13.

Tottenham are coming off the back of an impressive win against their local rivals Arsenal. Young striker Harry Kane scored both the goals in the 2 - 1 win and he continues to go from strength to strength.

Stopping the striker will be key to victory, Kane already has 12 league goals this season, more than Liverpool’s top 2 league scorers (Raheem Sterling and Steven Gerrard combined) who have 5 each.

Liverpool strangely however may feel confident in keeping him at bay. The Reds have kept four clean sheets in their last five league games after a horrific defensive record earlier in the season.

Liverpool’s problem recently has been goals. Liverpool have only scored 33 goals this season so far averaging only 1.38 goals per game. This is down from last season as well as conversion rate and pass accuracy.

Some have been talking up the battle between Kane and Sturridge although it is unclear if the Liverpool man will even start. Even if he does he is lacking match fitness and shouldn’t be judged off on game. His return could signal the goals Liverpool need.

Liverpool will be confident factoring their recent record against Tottenham. I took great pleasure last season in discussing football with my Tottenham friends and this good record continued into this season. Liverpool have won the last four vs Spurs and will want to continue this fine run.

Liverpool’s team will likely be similar to the one that played at Everton. Young winger Jordan Ibe is likely to keep his place and he definitely deserves to after a strong performance. Lucas will miss the game with injury meaning either Allen will come in or Gerrard will drop into a deeper role. If this happens Adam Lallana seems likely to come in.

Mario Balotelli did not even make the bench against Everton and I expect him to once again be excluded from the match day squad.

This is a tough one to call. While Tottenham did win at Arsenal on Saturday they do have a habit of folding in big games, particularly away from home. They do seem to have more spine under Pochettino however but I still predict a Liverpool victory.

Everton vs Liverpool Match Report

Everton vs Liverpool Match Report

There was no joy for Steven Gerrard in his last Merseyside derby as it ended in a stalemate.

Liverpool will be disappointed however as they dominated every statistic except for the one that matters most. They had 17 attempts compared to the 6 of Everton.

Liverpool had the better of the opening play and nearly made it count when Everton’s keeper came out for the ball but was beaten to it by Raheem Sterling. The Liverpool forward however tried to sneak the ball in the near post and his shot was well wide.

Philippe Coutinho won a free kick from about 25 yards out. Steven Gerrard stepped up and his effort needed tipping over by the Everton keeper Joel.

The ball then nearly fell to surprise inclusion Jordan Ibe. A Raheem Sterling shot was deflected but the Everton Keeper was just quick enough to prevent the goal.

Everton had an opportunity when a cross came to Naismith but his header was tame and was easily collected by keeper Mingolet.

The closest either team came was from a magnificent attempt from Liverpool youngster Jordan Ibe. He ran at the Everton defence before twisting past Brian Oviedo before taking a shot that thumped into the post.

Early in the second half Coutinho nicked the ball off Gareth Barry but his pass was intercepted with four Liverpool attacked running at the goal against only one defender. Liverpool should’ve been in and scored here but the fortunate Everton team survived.

Raheem Sterling had a shot from the left corner of the box but it was easily saved. Coutinho then played through Sterling again but his shot was easily saved with Gerrard free in the box for the pull back.

From the resulting corner the ball looped up and Gerrard ran in with an acrobatic volley but it was deflected by an Everton player over the bar.

On sixty minutes Daniel Sturridge came on for the Reds and he soon had an attempt on goal. The impressive Jordan Ibe made himself some space and played a low cross to Alberto Moreno. The ball bounced off the full back for Sturridge to take a quick snap shot but it was blocked by Jagielka.

On 85 minutes Everton finally had their first effort on goal when Ross Barkley played a good through pass to Seamus Coleman. His shot was well tipped away By Simon Mingolet. Barkley also played a ball down the right flank to the world’s happiest footballer Aaron Lennon but his cross was easily intercepted by Liverpool’s keeper.

Everton though were clearly happy with the draw as they bought on centre back Alcaraz in the dyeing moments to ensure there were no goals. Liverpool huffed and puffed but could not find the crucial breakthrough.

So there was no last magical moment from Gerrard but Liverpool played very well and all the performance was missing was a goal. Another plus was the impressive performance from Jordan Ibe. The young winger was full of confidence and the best player on the pitch. Liverpool’s next game is a big one in midweek at home to Tottenham Hotspur.

Everton vs Liverpool Preview

Everton vs Liverpool Preview

The big game is here as Liverpool take on Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday.

The Mersey side derby is always important. Tomorrow however it takes on extra significance, not only due to the teams league positions but also because this will be Steven Gerrard’s last ever Mersey side derby.

After a horrendous start Liverpool are only four points off Southampton in fourth place. Everton meanwhile are actually closer to the relegation zone than they are to Liverpool and will want to win a few games to avoid a potential relegation battle.

Liverpool will be confident, winning their last three league games. They have not conceded a goal in that time and their attack is once again beginning to look fluid and fast. They will want to take this into the game against struggling Everton who have only won twice in the last ten league games.

Yes if Liverpool were apparently in crisis I can’t begin to imagine what Everton are in. The biggest problem the team in blue are having this season is that they are not scoring as many goals are their opponents. They will want to change that against the Reds.

Liverpool have a very good record in this fixture. Everton have only won once in the last ten meetings. Steven Gerrard also often does well against Everton, scoring nine goals against them.

Gerrard will want to light up this fixture one last time before leaving for the U.S.A. He has made so many memorable moments including his free kick in the reverse fixture at Anfield. Always one for the big occasion I wouldn’t be surprised to see a magnificent performance from him this game.

Liverpool’s team will likely be similar to the one that beat Bolton in midweek. Henderson will likely be restored to the starting line-up and I would like to see Sturridge start on the bench again. Sturridge does have a good record against Everton, scoring three in his last two games against them. However the worst thing Liverpool could do is rush him back and get him injured again.

It will be interesting to see if Balotelli can make the squad for this game. Personally I doubt it as his move seems to have failed and he does not fit into Liverpool’s plans or new system.

It is very difficult to predict Derby matches but I think Liverpool will win this one. If Liverpool can score first, with their current confidence compared to Everton’s I think it will be a fairly comfortable win.

Bolton Wanderers vs Liverpool Match Report

Bolton Wanderers vs Liverpool Match Report

Liverpool survive a scare as they progress to the next round of the F.A. cup, eliminating unlucky Bolton.

The reds can breathe a sigh of relief after two late goals saved them against a plucky Bolton side. Liverpool will be pleased with how they remained calm under pressure to snatch the win from Bolton’s grasp.

Liverpool had a chance early on through Steven Gerrard on his 700th game for Liverpool. The ball was laid off to him but his side footed shot was too close to the Bolton keeper.

Philippe Coutinho has a good opportunity that he crafted for himself after skiping through multiple Bolton challenges but he was stopped by the last defender.

The closest Liverpool came in the first half was from a Raheem Sterling effort. Inside the box he was given too much space and from a standing position his curling shot hit the post.

Liverpool were dominating possession but it was Bolton who took the lead. Bolton’s Zach Clough skipped past reds defender Martin Skrtel before tripping. Despite the Slovaks protests the referee pointed to the spot. Former Chelsea forward Eidur Gudjohnsen calmly dispatched the penalty to give Bolton the lead.

Bolton should have gone two up after a great cross from Dean Moxey reached the head of Gudjohnsen but instead of heading back across goal his header was tame and bounced into the turf and then into the greatful arms of Mingolet.

The a crucial moment when Bolton midfielder Neil Danns, who had being playing well up to this point was sent off for a second yellow card after a second reckless tackle on Joe Allen.

Liverpool had multiple chances to score the equaliser, with Jordan Henderson taking a shot after the ball rebounded to him from a corner. His deflected shot however hit the post. Emre Can then had a shot cannon off the bar.

Liverpool could have been forgiven for thinking it would not be there night but they did not give up and they were rewarded when Can played a delightful chipped pass over the defence for Sterling. The young England man on the volley slotted the ball between the keepers legs into the net.

Liverpool still had time to win the game when Philippe Coutinho received the ball from Jordan Henderson before smashing the ball in from distance off the underside of the bar to break the hearts of the Championship side.

Liverpool manager will be pleased with the character shown by his side to come back from a goal down. They will hope to continue their fine run in the Mersey side derby on Saturday.

Bolton Wanderers vs Liverpool Preview

Bolton Wanderers vs Liverpool Preview

The Reds will be hoping for safe passage into to next round of the F.A. Cup away at a resilient Bolton Wanderers side.

While playing okay in the last game Liverpool will be very frustrated they couldn’t progress in the home tie. They face a tricky away trip against a Bolton side who will want to bounce back after 3 games without a win.

It’s hard to know what to say now that won’t be repeating myself. So … This game is not at Anfield.

Liverpool will be looking to carry on their impressive defensive record of late as they have only conceded four goals in the last seven games, with three of those coming against Chelsea.  They are looking far more solid and will hope this continues.

Despite not shipping any goals against Liverpool, Bolton have shipped six in the last two games and Liverpool’s resurgent attack may feel confident in breaking down Bolton’s defence this time around.

Bolton’s goalkeeper played extremely well last time and you would think they will need a similarly good performance this time around. They will be hoping the home advantage could be the advantage they need to cause an upset.

Bolton may look to former reds striker Emile Heskey to provide the firepower. Despite becoming well known for his lack of goals, he was once a prolific striker and is one of the few players to have scored over 100 premier league goals. He will be hoping to add to his tally against him former club.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers may however play some younger players in the game with one eye on the weekend match against local rivals Everton. Jordan Rossiter is likely to feature with the like of Steven Gerrard and Raheem Sterling likely to be rested in some capacity.

I do not expect Daniel Sturridge to feature. He has had a long injury lay off and you would think it would be unwise to risk him so soon after playing a part on Saturday.  The last thing Rodger’s and Liverpool need is for him to pick up another injury and he may be saved for the Merseyside derby.

This will likely be a tricky game for the Reds but they should feel confident following on from some good form. I expect Liverpool to win this one, with it being a low scoring game.

Liverpool vs West Ham United Match Report

Liverpool vs West Ham United Match Report

Sturridge scores on his comeback as Liverpool secure 3 points against the Hammers at Anfield

It was a solid display from the Reds who not only won but picked up a third clean sheet in their last five league games.

It was Andy Carrol who had an early chance when Joey O’Brien played a low cross into the box but Carrol took a heavy touch and the ball was cleared. From the break away after some good player from Coutinho and Sterling, Lallana played the ball to Markovic near the edge of the box but he didn’t get hold of his shot and it was easily blocked.

Philippe Coutinho was through on goal after a wonderful backheel from Sterling but Hammers keeper Adrián made the save at the near post.

Lazar Markovic had the chance of the first half right on the stroke of half time. Sterling was bought down in the box and was judged to not have been fouled. West Ham however failed to get the ball away allowing the Serb a strike on goal from about 10 yards out but his shot went wide.

Liverpool did take the lead early in the second half however. Moreno played the ball into the chest of Sterling who chested it down to Coutinho. The Brazilian clipped the ball over West Ham defender James Collins for Sterling to coolly slot home from close range. This was Sterling first home league goal since the opening day of the season.

West Ham rarely threatened With Enner Valencia testing Simon Mingolet after working space for a shot from the edge of the box.

On 68 minutes the moment Reds fans had been waiting for for 5 months happened as Daniel Sturridge came on as a substitute for Lazar Markovic. He looked sharp after coming on and soon tested Adrián after one of his signature step overs past the defender.

On the 80th minute he did get on the score sheet after a good team goal. Sturridge headed a throw in down to Henderson who played the ball to Sterling who passed to Sturridge. Sturridge layed the ball off for Coutinho who carried the ball forward before playing in Sturridge. The returning England Man took the ball away from the defenders before finishing from a tight angle on his weaker foot.

The Hammers did have the ball in the net from a late corner but the Referee decided there was a foul on the Liverpool goal keeper and the Reds clean sheet was left intact.

Liverpool will be pleased with their performance as well as winning their third league game in a row. West Ham may feel unlucky as they suffered multiple injuries in the game including that of former Liverpool striker Andy Carrol. Liverpool’s next game is away at Bolton in the F.A. cup replay on Wednesday night.
