Besiktas vs Liverpool
Match Report
Liverpool’s European ambitions end for another year as they
crash out of the Europa league in Turkey.
It was a disappointing night for Liverpool who under
performed on the night and cannot complain about their elimination.
Very little happened in the game overall. In the first half
Mario Balotelli slipped the ball through to Daniel Sturridge but he waited too
long to take his shot and it was saved.
Besiktas mainly had shots from range until on the 72nd
minute where after some neat interplay at the edge of the box substitute Arslan
curled the ball into the top corner.
Late into the game a corner was taken and the ball fell to
former Chelsea striker Demba Ba. He struck the ball goal wards but fortunately for
the reds the ball cannoned off the bar.
Liverpool looked drained as the game went on after so many
games recently and they couldn’t really get a foot hold in the game. Extra time
passed them by with very little opportunity and the game went to penalties.
The first nine penalties were not saveable for either keeper.
For the tenth penalty Dejan Lovren stepped up and his penalty blazed over the
bar sending and this Liverpool side became the first to lose a penalty shoot-out
in Europe.
The game looked a bit beyond the Reds who had multiple
players out injured and having played so many games lately. The usually nimble
attack looked slow and ponderous and Liverpool couldn’t get any dominance in
midfield.
In extra time especially Liverpool barely had the ball in
the oppositions half. While it’s always disappointing to go out of Europe it
may not be the worst thing. Liverpool have had a lot of games this season and
having less games was an obvious advantage for the Reds last season.
So yes it was a disappointing night for Liverpool who
crashed out of the Europa league. They will need to improve their performance
on Sunday when host champions Manchester City.
