Everton vs Liverpool Match Report

Everton vs Liverpool Match Report

There was no joy for Steven Gerrard in his last Merseyside derby as it ended in a stalemate.

Liverpool will be disappointed however as they dominated every statistic except for the one that matters most. They had 17 attempts compared to the 6 of Everton.

Liverpool had the better of the opening play and nearly made it count when Everton’s keeper came out for the ball but was beaten to it by Raheem Sterling. The Liverpool forward however tried to sneak the ball in the near post and his shot was well wide.

Philippe Coutinho won a free kick from about 25 yards out. Steven Gerrard stepped up and his effort needed tipping over by the Everton keeper Joel.

The ball then nearly fell to surprise inclusion Jordan Ibe. A Raheem Sterling shot was deflected but the Everton Keeper was just quick enough to prevent the goal.

Everton had an opportunity when a cross came to Naismith but his header was tame and was easily collected by keeper Mingolet.

The closest either team came was from a magnificent attempt from Liverpool youngster Jordan Ibe. He ran at the Everton defence before twisting past Brian Oviedo before taking a shot that thumped into the post.

Early in the second half Coutinho nicked the ball off Gareth Barry but his pass was intercepted with four Liverpool attacked running at the goal against only one defender. Liverpool should’ve been in and scored here but the fortunate Everton team survived.

Raheem Sterling had a shot from the left corner of the box but it was easily saved. Coutinho then played through Sterling again but his shot was easily saved with Gerrard free in the box for the pull back.

From the resulting corner the ball looped up and Gerrard ran in with an acrobatic volley but it was deflected by an Everton player over the bar.

On sixty minutes Daniel Sturridge came on for the Reds and he soon had an attempt on goal. The impressive Jordan Ibe made himself some space and played a low cross to Alberto Moreno. The ball bounced off the full back for Sturridge to take a quick snap shot but it was blocked by Jagielka.

On 85 minutes Everton finally had their first effort on goal when Ross Barkley played a good through pass to Seamus Coleman. His shot was well tipped away By Simon Mingolet. Barkley also played a ball down the right flank to the world’s happiest footballer Aaron Lennon but his cross was easily intercepted by Liverpool’s keeper.

Everton though were clearly happy with the draw as they bought on centre back Alcaraz in the dyeing moments to ensure there were no goals. Liverpool huffed and puffed but could not find the crucial breakthrough.

So there was no last magical moment from Gerrard but Liverpool played very well and all the performance was missing was a goal. Another plus was the impressive performance from Jordan Ibe. The young winger was full of confidence and the best player on the pitch. Liverpool’s next game is a big one in midweek at home to Tottenham Hotspur.
